One of the biggest advantages of basalt is its exceptional durability. Formed from cooled lava, basalt is an igneous rock that can withstand heavy foot traffic, harsh weather conditions, and years of use without losing its strength or beauty. Few hardscape materials can match its longevity, while its natural appearance adds a level of authenticity that manufactured products simply cannot replicate.
When we first met with the homeowners, they had a clear vision for their outdoor space. They wanted a backyard that evoked the timeless charm of the stone streets and pathways found throughout historic Italian towns and villages. We immediately knew the perfect material to bring that vision to life: basalt stone risers.
Basalt risers are natural volcanic stone blocks used as the vertical component of outdoor staircases. When paired with basalt treads, they create stunning, durable transitions between different elevations in a landscape. Their rugged beauty and natural character make them a standout feature in any outdoor setting.

Working with basalt is no easy task. These stones are incredibly heavy and require careful planning and installation. However, the uniqueness of each individual piece is what makes projects like this so rewarding. Every stone has its own shape, texture, and character, creating a one-of-a-kind result that stands apart from the more uniform appearance of many traditional hardscaping materials.
To further enhance the design, we incorporated basalt boulders into the garden beds and used basalt stack stone edging around the pool and newly installed patio. The patio itself was constructed using Newstone paving stones in the Glacier colour, providing a clean, contemporary contrast to the natural stone elements throughout the yard.
To complement the new outdoor living area, we also installed a beautiful cedar gazebo with a metal roof. This addition creates a comfortable, shaded space for barbecuing, entertaining, and enjoying the backyard throughout the summer months.
The finished result perfectly captures the homeowners' original vision—a backyard that feels both timeless and inviting, with the character and elegance of old-world stone craftsmanship.
Most importantly, the homeowners are thrilled with the outcome. Seeing the genuine smiles on our clients' faces after completing a challenging project like this is what makes all the hard work worthwhile.
